The Artist

My name is Sarah and I am hands, heart and soul behind Sarah Miller Pottery.

It’s been a winding path toward becoming a ceramic artist but I have been involved in art my entire life in some capacity. From spending hours diligently coloring as a child to feverishly editing photos for a basketball game as a photojournalist. I’ve explored a variety of mediums throughout my life, with some bringing me more joy than others. I’ve spent time with acrylics, oils and watercolors. Plaster and paper. Etching on metal plates and drawing with oil-based pencils on limestone. Developed film in darkrooms and filled up many a memory card with hundreds of thousands of digital photographs. Yet somehow never getting the opportunity to sit down at a potter’s wheel and throw clay.

My professional career took me toward photography for many years. I worked for several companies as a photojournalist as well as a freelanced for other publications. It was work that brought me a lot of satisfaction for nearly 10 years and won me several awards. Eventually though, through a series of tough decisions, I left the world of photography and even art for two years. And after 30 years of life, 14 of them being spent with a simmering desire to take up pottery, I finally signed myself up for a 6-week course. And then another. And then started a studio membership. And practiced and practiced and threw a lot of terrible pots until I threw some okay ones. And learned from the okay ones to throw some good ones. Good ones that make me happy and I hope will make others happy too.
